Between 17 and 20 May this year, Canberra will host the best and brightest of Australia’s museum sector, bringing directors, curators and even students together for the Museums Australia National Conference. Investigating the current state of our iconic institutions, the Museums Australia National Conference will explore the changing face of the country’s galleries and museums, painting a picture of how things might look as we delve deeper into the 21st century.

One woman who knows a thing or two about the sector is Gabrielle Hyslop, the former Director of Audience Development and Pubic Programs at the National Museum of Australia. Though she’s officially retired, Hyslop has found the time to put together the massive conference program while serving as Co-Chair of the Programming Committee and a member of the Conference Organising Group. It will feature six of the most revered industry practitioners, who will deliver keynote addresses, as well as 38 concurrent sessions. Before undertaking the titanic task of sifting through abstracts and courting speakers, Hyslop first turned her attention to an area she understands well – the audience.
