Machinima, short for machine, cinema and anime, is the practice of making filmic productions in real time within a virtual 3D world, such as a computer game.

Up until 1996, machinima was used as a way to archive performance runs in computer games that enabled recording. This demoscene was expanded into the creative realm with the release of Diary of a Camper and subsequent other narrative-driven machinima works.
