We are a bold and adventurous 21st century Aboriginal owned and managed not-for-profit arts and cultural organisation. Our unique programs and services include the only collection in Victoria dedicated soley to Koorie art and culture with more than 3,900 artefacts and artworks, thousands of stone tools, an estimated 85,000 photographs, approximately 3,000 piece reference library and 1,800 oral history audio and visual recordings.
We also offer: an annual series of exhibitions and associated public programs; a Koorie Family History Service that recently celebrated 10 years of tracing family trees for Stolen Generations clients and the Koorie community; and an education program that includes guided cultural walks for schools, public sector and corporate organisations and the general public, professional development sessions for educators, and Indigenous Cross Cultural Awareness Training.
We promote ourselves on our values of Respect, Honesty, Reciprocity and Curiosity to meet our stated Vision and Purpose: to promote, support and celebrate the continuing journey of the Aboriginal culture of South-Eastern Australia; and to live in a society where Aboriginal culture and history are a fundamental part of Victorian life.
In July 2015 the Koorie Heritage Trust moved to Levels 1 and 3 of the Yarra Building at Federation Square and celebrated our 30th birthday. The move recognises the importance of Koorie cultural sites and spaces to Australia’s heritage, life and economic and social development. It brings Koorie people, their culture and heritage from the literal and figurative fringes to a place that is not only of historical significance to Koorie people, but which has become central to the contemporary lives of all Australians.
