About Us

Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)

Australia’s largest private museum. Ancient, modern and contemporary art. Founded by philanthropist and collector David Walsh (1961 -) and known locally as “our bogan”.

Museum opened: January 21, 2011

MONA houses a diverse private collection that ranges from ancient Egyptian mummies to some of the world’s most infamous and thought-provoking contemporary art. Its location on the Derwent River just north of Hobart, the building’s subterranean design and the owner’s unconventional and challenging curatorial approach is making it a must-see for any visitor to Australia.

MONA offers visitors a vineyard setting within a 15-minute drive of Hobart, on-site accommodation, world-class fine dining, cellar door tastings, micro-brewery tours, heated pool, sauna and gymnasium, an all-year events program and an internationally significant museum with a café and museum shop.

MONA has eight accommodation pavilions featuring ancient and contemporary art (and bits in between), all furnished by leading local and international designers. Each pavilion has its own distinct character and is named after an artist or architect that impacted MONA.

Visitors can eat at The Source Restaurant, the Wine Bar or the Mona cafe; have a Moorilla wine tasting and vineyard tour with an expert; or join a Moo Brew micro-brewery tour.

Museum exhibition program

MONA's permanent exhibition: MONANISM - Evolving. Curated by David Walsh, Olivier Varenne and Nicole Durling and the MONA team.

The permanent collection exhibition continues; however, we keep changing.  Check our website for the latest.

Each year MONA organises two festivals in Hobart:

MONA FOMA, our art and music festival runs every January at various locations around Hobart including the waterfront, and MONA itself. Curated by Violent Femmes and The Break bassist – Brian Ritchie, with Nicole Durling and Olivier Varenne. Visit for past programs.

Dark Mofo, is timed to coincide with the Winter Solstice (June). We honour ancient and contemporary mythologies, darkness and light, birth and death, fire and ice - with some good music, art and food thrown in. The usual MONA obsessions, with a darker twist. Visit
