The Burnie Regional Art Gallery, open since 1978, serves the north-west and west coasts of Tasmania. The region encompasses seascapes, rich agricultural land and rugged mountain scenery. This substantial regional gallery is funded and operated by the Burnie City Council with support from Arts Tasmania.
The Gallery presents a varied and vibrant exhibitions program in three large gallery spaces, averaging 30 exhibitions per year. Exhibitions feature work in all mediums by Tasmanian, mainland and international artists, as well as exhibitions from national touring networks. On occasion the gallery also presents special social and community history and other displays of particular interest and significance to the region.
Through its public program arts UNEARTHED, the Gallery also presents events such as artist talks, concerts, workshops and school holiday programs.
The Permanent Collection:
The Gallery possesses a fine collection of works on paper, recognition of the strong historical presence of the papermaking industry in the region. The core of the collection is the strong emphasis on prints but the gallery also collects work in other media by contemporary Australian and particularly Tasmanian artists. Presently the permanent collection numbers over 1000 works and contains work by many well-known Australian artists including Arthur Boyd, Jack Carington Smith, Peter Booth, Euan MacLeod, David Chapman, Geoff Dyer, Bea Maddock, John Olsen, Lloyd Rees and Mike Parr to name a few. While not on permanent view, given adequate notice the gallery can arrange viewing of selected work by students or other interested visitors.
The Print Collection:
The Permanent Collection has a strong emphasis on fine prints including screenprints, etchings, lithographs and linocuts, by artists from around the nation.
The Burnie Print Prize was established in 2007 as a biennial event, by the then Director Belinda Wright. In monetary terms the prize is now the second largest acquisitive print prize in Australia, supported equally by the Friends of BRAG and the Burnie City Council.
The gallery shop is well known for its range of quality cards, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and books mostly supplied by Tasmanian artists.
