About Us

The University of South Australia’s Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art is widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading university art museums and is our state’s second-largest public gallery devoted to the visual arts.

The Samstag Museum of Art presents a changing exhibitions program of contemporary visual art, and art of the past that has relevance for us today. The museum has been named in honour of two distinguished American benefactors to Australian culture, whose remarkable bequest provides opportunities for Australian artists to study overseas with the Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarships.

Our ambition is to present South Australian audiences with a full diversity of the contemporary visual arts, in all its forms, and of a quality equal to anything that can be found interstate, or for that matter, internationally.

Designed by John Wardle Architects in association with Hassell, the Samstag Museum of Art is located in the Hawke Building and features three substantial and elegant exhibition galleries over two levels. It is a facility that communicates architectural distinction.
