The youngest but most dynamic national screen cultural event, Adelaide Film Festival was established in 2002 and was placed in Variety magazine’s list of “50 Unmissable Film Festivals”. It is Australia’s premier film event launching new films, art and interactive projects to national and international audiences.
The most recent festival (2013) was particularly satisfying in its competition selection, reinforced by wonderful screenings of non-competing films, by the inspired overlap with the Adelaide Festival of Ideas, and by as convivial a social life as it is possible to have while still remaining functional.
It is a model festival in many respects.
Al Clark, 2013 AFF Jury President, Producer – The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, author, AACTA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient
2013 was Amanda Duthie’s first Festival after arriving in Adelaide from her previous role as Head of Arts & Entertainment at ABC TV. As a fresh arrival to South Australia, she delivered not one but two marquee events as the Director/CEO of AFF, and CEO of the Adelaide Festival of Ideas, working alongside Director, Sophie Black.
Adelaide is the jewel of Australian film festivals. It has a laid back laconic nature that invites the individual in. Adelaide is about quality not quantity or fulfilling a quota, it has a charm and nature that is uniquely South Australian. It is about stories, sharing stories and friendship.
Wayne Blair, Director – The Sapphires
AFF’s first berth in October, having moved from the festival activities of March (Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe & WOMADelaide), enabled AFF to increase its visibility in the city, expand its audience base and garner more media coverage than ever. It also served to balance the annual calendar with key springtime events. Currently we are biennial with our next event in 2015.
David and I are proud and excited to be part of the always fabulous, always interesting and always challenging Adelaide Film Festival. No wonder it’s ranked amongst the top 50 festivals in the world.
