About Us

Artbank was formed in 1980 by the Australian government through the allocation of operational funding and 600 works from the National Lending Collection. Conceived as a support mechanism for Australian contemporary art, Artbank has two main objectives:

  • support the development of Australian contemporary art though the acquisition of the work of living artists; and
  • the promotion of the value of Australian contemporary art to the broader public through a leasing program and other initiatives.

Since its formation, Artbank has actively collected the work of living Australian artists, expanding on its initial 600 works to develop a collection of nearly 10,000 pieces of Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultural product spanning art form, practice area and medium. The collection was most recently valued at nearly thirty-seven millions dollars and is an extremely valuable asset both in terms of inherent worth and cultural significance.  Artbank manages this public collection on behalf of the Commonwealth.

Artworks from the Artbank collection are made available to the general public through a leasing program.  Any business or individual located in Australia can select one or more works for 6 months or longer, from as little as $150.00 per year. We have offices in three states – Sydney (head office), Melbourne and Perth and highly trained staff ready to assist - so why not give us a call and explore the possibilities.
