About Us

Blacktown Arts is a recognised leader in the development of contemporary arts in Australia. We support artistic innovation and offer exciting, new experiences for audiences through an award-winning curated program of exhibitions, performances, workshops, residencies and events. Blacktown Arts is committed to exploring dynamic, culturally diverse work that reflects Blacktown, its history and its communities. We place Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and communities at the heart of our program to develop new work drawing on issues of local and global significance.

The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre is an innovative multi-arts hub located in the heart of Blacktown, a short walk from the railway station. It is located on the ancestral lands of the Darug people at the highest point of land in what is now the Blacktown CBD. The Centre has:

  • 2 gallery spaces
  • 75-seat performance studio
  • Workshop studio
  • Weaving garden

General admission is free.

History

Originally built in the 1950s as an Anglican church, the building was deconsecrated in 1999. Although originally acquired by Blacktown City Council as a site for a car park, the Council subsequently worked in partnership with Arts NSW on a capital works program aimed at refurbishing the building as a multi-arts centre. The Arts Centre opened to the public in October 2002.

  • Blacktown Arts is dedicated to contemporary interdisciplinary and cross-arts practices
  • Blacktown Arts takes a leadership role in the development of Western Sydney artists and the promotion of their work to regional, national and international audiences.
  • Blacktown Arts operates on two key principles - a commitment to excellence in arts development and the empowerment of the Western Sydney community.

Blacktown Arts presents a curated program of exhibitions, performances, workshops and events. Their focus is primarily on arts development in the visual and performing arts but is also active in literature, film, new media and hybrid arts practices.

Blacktown Arts offers a range of support structures for artists - intensive residencies, mentoring, access to networks and professional development opportunities.

Blacktown Arts is active in developing new audiences and new experiences for audiences. The Centre takes great pride in providing access to world quality performances and events and supporting artists in experimenting with their artforms.

Blacktown Arts also cultivates partnerships with key cultural organisations to build a healthy sector for arts development in the region, ensuring our projects are adequately resourced, artistically challenging and critically responsive.

Blacktown Arts is firmly committed to exploring the best work from Western Sydney, the most dynamic and culturally diverse region in the country, and in promoting it as a vital part of Australian contemporary arts practice
