Executive Director

The role of the Executive Director is to lead, conceptualize, fundraise, develop and implement projects that incorporate artistic, market and craft and design development objectives. The Director will ensure the long-term financial sustainability of Design Tasmania and represent and maintain a public profile and presence in the sector (locally and nationally). The Executive Director will represent Design Tasmania on internal committees as required and support the Design Tasmania Board. The Executive Director will successfully contribute to the strategic vision, leadership and oversight of partnerships and initiatives, deliver organisational outcomes, and identify and liaise positively and proactively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

Design Tasmania is an effective not-for-profit organisation dedicated to nurturing a vibrant design ecosystem locally and nationally. Our vision is for a successful Tasmania where 'Design Makes the Difference' to enterprises, the community, and individuals. 

Duties

  • Formulate, oversee and drive the not-for-profit operations, programs, exhibitions and activities of Design Tasmania in accordance with the vision and strategy agreed with the Board of Directors and provide guidance on retail strategy.
  • Lead, inspire, motivate and mentor the team of staff and volunteers and work positively and proactively under pressure.
  • Advocate for Design Tasmania to raise its profile locally, across Tasmania and to interstate and international audiences and in particular to the design communities (in person and online).
  • Secure and manage the resources required for the effective and efficient operation and development of Design Tasmania including the development of annual budgets for income and expenditure and appropriate strategies for securing organisational and project resources.
  • Ensure financial acquittals and annual audits are completed as required. 
  • Develop and supervise effective risk management strategies for projects as required. 
  • Manage and enhance existing key partnerships with Commonwealth Agencies including the Australia Council for the Arts, the State Agency Arts Tasmania, businesses and cultural trusts and foundations including The Ian Potter Foundation. 
  • Research and pursue creatively new funding opportunities where possible. 
  • Ensure projects have a documented process and outcomes communications plan prior to project commencement. 
  • Maintain strong and positive internal communications on direction and key projects with key stakeholders, staff, volunteers and the Board. 
  • Accomplish financial growth and viability through entrepreneurial and commercial initiatives.
