Pro-rata salary range is $48,000 to $52,000 plus superannuation.  The position is part-time (4 days).

The Assistant Curator, Visual Arts will work with the Curator, Programs, the Exhibition Manager, CEO and other program and production staff to assist the delivery of complex contemporary visual arts projects. 



  • Provide support to Curator, Programs by undertaking in-depth research on contemporary artists and art practices.
  • Provide administrative and project delivery support to Curator, Programs, Exhibition Manager and on occasion Director, First Nations Programs in order to significantly contribute to the delivery and presentation of Carriageworks’ contemporary visual arts program, including drafting and issuing artist contracts, preparing and managing project budgets, arranging artist travel and schedules, scheduling installation and deinstallation, engaging and managing external contractors, ensuring a high standard of registration and conservation practices, arranging freight, preparing internal project briefs and authoring interpretive material.
  • Contribute to publications by conducting research, compiling and on occasion authoring copy, sourcing images and copyright approval, proofreading and liaising with contributors and stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Provide support to Curator, Programs for the management of the Clothing Store Artist Studio program. 
  • Work collaboratively and effectively as a member of the Carriageworks Artistic Program team and maintain effective team communication with all departments including First Nations Programs, Production, Communications and Partnerships and Corporate Services.
  • Engage as an active member of the contemporary arts community
  • Work with an awareness of, and a commitment to, maintaining the highest standards in relation to Workplace Health and Safety.
  • Other duties as required.  


  • Tertiary qualification in art history or equivalent.  
  • Experience in working closely with contemporary artists in the commissioning and presentation of visual arts projects. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience with art writing and delivering floor talks as well as the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international and local contemporary art. 


  • Well-developed research skills. 
  • Experience in developing and managing project budgets. 
  • Excellent organisational skills including the ability to set priorities, develop plans and meet deadlines, while maintaining excellent attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Ability to work as an effective team member with minimal supervision.
  • Well-developed computer skills, including the competent use of Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite
  • Working knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S).  


  • Flexible approach to working hours, including the capacity to work evenings and weekends.
