State of Play

Turn your documentary project into a playable reality!

State of Play is AIDC’s new $25,000 pitching initiative designed to unleash innovative storytelling through collaboration between nonfiction stories and gaming technologies – bringing new documentary games to life.

Co-presented by AIDC & Film Victoria, applications are now open for Australian nonfiction practitioners who are currently completing or have recently completed a documentary or factual project to submit an idea for a documentary game.

Up to four story ideas will be selected to be paired with four of Victoria’s top indie game developers, with teams given six weeks to turn the original idea into a playable proof of concept.

Applications close Sunday 13 December 2020 23:59 (AEDT). Late applications will not be accepted.

The four teams will pitch publicly to a panel of experts as part of AIDC’s Innovation Day.

The most viable project team will be awarded $25,000 of project funding to turn their proof of concept into a playable reality. The pitching session will be hosted online.

In addition to competing for the prize, all teams will have the opportunity for online mentoring from two world-recognised leaders working across documentary, innovation and gaming to help them develop their proof of concept. Mentors include:

  • Katerina Cizek, Artistic Director, Co-Founder and Executive Producer of the Co-Creation Studio at MIT Open Documentary Lab
  • Vassiliki Khonsari, Producer of Interactive, Games, XR/VR, Immersive, Episodi, Features, Co-Founder, iNK Stories

 A virtual information session will be held at 10 AM (AEDT) on Friday 8 January 2021 for successful applicants to meet mentors, be paired with developers, and ask any questions about the process.

Submitting to State of Play is free and easy with no previous experience in gaming development necessary. It is open to all Australian nonfiction storytellers looking to explore the possibilities for transforming their documentary or factual idea into a game. To submit, you just need to provide the following:

  • An outline of an idea (up to 2000 words). Please include in the outline
    • A story outline including access to characters/participants and use of pre-existing materials;
    • Why and how it will be a compelling story for a game;
    • Who you envisage as your key audience.
  • Materials that you think can support your outline.
    • This could include key scenes (of no more than ten minutes) from a project in production or completed, animations, character studies, pitch decks, etc.

All nonfiction ideas are welcome, but we particularly encourage those that highlight diversity and inclusion.  Applications close Wednesday 16 December 2020 23:59 (AEDT). Late applications will not be accepted.
