Adelaide Film Festival 2013: of silver frocks and tatty animals

Scott Hicks' Don Dunstan Award gave him a chance to reflect on the nature of chance and the special quality of living in Adelaide.

Don Dunstan was the Premier of South Australia who created the very first State film agency, and really pioneered the detailed government engagement with feature film production finances.

“This means a lot to me,” said Hicks. “People who say awards are meaningless have either never won one or won too many. This one in particular is so special because were it not for the doorway that Don Dunstan opened forty years ago, a doorway that I noticed at a critical point in my life, and went through, it is highly unlikely that I would ever have become a filmmaker.”
