Archbishop James Goold is mostly forgotten, yet his greatest monument, St Patrick’s, is the largest neo-gothic Cathedral completed in the nineteenth century. Bluestone is not his only legacy. Scattered through churches, convents and private collections are the remnants of a major collection of late-Baroque religious art, and his valuable library is similarly dispersed. In this lecture Shane Carmody will tell the story of rediscovering Goold and his impact on the creation of our city.
