Curated by Hyphenated Projects, the inaugural Hyphenated Biennial presents ten new commissions by First Nations and Asian diasporic artists.

Hyphenated Biennial is a multi-venue exhibition that has supported a collective of artists in Melbourne’s west throughout the turbulent years of 2020 and 2021.

The exhibition explores the artists’ personal histories, the sites they inhabit, the materials they inherit and the systems we all exist within. At a time of huge loss, artists and curators of the project have been confronted with questions of existence, agency, and the responsibility to those around us. Between the personal and the collective, across time and space, they respond to one another through knowledge learned, embodied and shared.

Hyphenated Biennial sets out to strengthen the community in the hope of informing the grand narratives of our time with care and solidarity. Here, a seed is sown for our possible collective futures.

Artists include Elyas Alavi, Moorina Bonini, Jacinta Keefe, Ellen YG Son, Jenna Lee, Jazz Money, Ashley Perry, Siying Zhou, Talia Smith, Beth Thornber and Sab D’Souza.
