Join artist and educator Emma Florence May for a creative workshop designed for LGBTQIA+ individuals, Rainbow families, and allies. Whether you’re part of the queer community, a supportive friend, or a family member, this session offers a welcoming space to learn, create, and celebrate diversity through art.
We’ll supply a treasure trove of materials—but the magic happens when you bring your own!
Photos, images, objects you love, oddities, memories—anything goes.
Let’s cut, glue, layer, and build something beautiful together.

What you’ll do:
- Learn practical art techniques in a supportive environment
- Experiment with colour, texture, and symbolism to express personal and family identity
- Use mixed media materials and techniques
Please wear enclosed shoes.
Basic materials provided, however, please feel free to bring your own materials to incorporate into your artwork eg. fabric, photos, imagery, objects, oddities, anything goes.

This event may be photographed and filmed, and your image could be used in advertising and promotion by Lake Macquarie City Council. Should you wish to not be photographed or filmed please advise event organisers on entry at the event.
About the venue
The Museum of Art and Culture (MAC yapang) is located at the end of First Street, Booragul, on the edge of Lake Macquarie. MAC has ramp access for wheelchairs and prams, baby changing facilities, and accessible toilets.
MAC yapang can be reached easily from the lake foreshore cycleway, the water, or by public transport. There is parking for cars and buses with accessible spaces available, onsite and adjacent to the Hunter Rowing Club.
About the Artist
Emma Florence May is a proud trans woman and a finalist in the MAC yapang Art Prize. Her work explores themes of identity and community, making her an inspiring guide for this workshop.
