Designed to challenge, stimulate and disturb, and also make you laugh, Awkward Giraffe’s Festival of Critical Comedy will take place over two days at the Unitarian Peace Memorial Church in East Melbourne.
Performing on both days is Ridiculusmus (David Woods, Jon Haynes), the renowned, award-winning comedy team from the UK, as well as other fine local comedians of a variety of types, genres and standpoints.
Join the fun and help choose the winning team in the Comedy Debate (Sunday) and peruse the “best of the worst” in the Bad Installation conceptual art exhibition.
George Bernard Shaw probably wasn’t talking about critical comedy when he said: “If you want to tell people the truth, you’d better make them laugh or they’ll kill you”.
Following the success of the first-ever Festival of Critical Comedy in 2023, the gaggle at the Not-for-Profit Awkward Giraffe has set out once again to put our preconceptions under the magnifying lens of humour.
Can critical comedy be the scalpel that slices through the viscera of our hypocritical humanity to expose the universal truths of our existence?
Can laughter make the world a better place? Or is it in the words of Jeremy Dixon, festival curator, the opiate of the defeated”?
