This series of contemporary daguerreotypes began with the intention to make a body of work that engaged with key ideas and identities found in significant mid-nineteenth century daguerreotypes housed in Australian public institutions. The work quickly developed into something far more complex: a living work, as much backward looking and historically inspired as informed by its own coalescing archive of new conversations and collaborations. These portraits meditate on colonisation, migration, environmentalism, separation and identity. Yet, their subjects intervene in these conversations from their position, wedged in the present-day. They ‘speak’ to current migrations, emerging relationships with a planet in ecological crisis as well as generationally unprecedented feelings of dislocation. This series considers colonisation, race, femininity and feminism at work as reified in the photographic studio. These issues surface in many of the cased daguerreotypes but like the portraits’ mirrored surfaces, represent shifting terrain, remaining unresolved. In our world of glancing, swiping and discarding, we are forgetting how to look at photographs. The daguerreotype allows for no such ambivalence; you either disengage entirely or you do the work to align your gaze so as to bring its unstable image into sharp relief
