By the later 19th century flowers had acquired rich symbolic associations. In this talk we will explore the ways in which, in his writing, Marcel Proust used both cultural and personal meanings to reflect and reconfigure changing fashions in flowers over time, from the chrysanthemums of Japonisme, via orchids, to the lilies of the 1920s.
