AFTRS Open, the short course division of The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) provides a highly esteemed path for those planning a career in in the media industries. But young people don’t have to wait until they graduate – or even reach high school – to take advantage of AFTRS’ creative courses.

The School Holiday Program in Sydney offers short courses for kids and teens providing opportunities to learn creative skills and fill the winter holidays with productive fun.

For teens aged 13 – 17 years, courses include: The Real Filmmaking Workshop,Writing a Short Film,Intro to Game App Design,Teens Radio and for younger teens there is Trop Jr Filmmaking Week.

Hero course, The Real Filmmaking Workshop teaches students to write, direct, shoot and edit a film in just five days. The students work with professional actors on a real set using state-of-the-art equipment to make their own film. ‘Great course, new friends and new ideas that helped us grow as filmmakers,’ was the feedback from one student.

For younger kids, aged 9 – 12 years, courses on offer include: Screen Acting for Kids, Make a Stop Motion Movie and Kids Digi Animation.

Exciting new courses in this year’s program include: 3D Digital Character Design and Auditions and Screen Tests for 13-17 years and Create Your Own Superhero for kids aged 9-12 years.

A great avenue to learn new skills, have fun and make new friends, the short courses are taught by industry professionals at AFTRS’ state-of-the-art film, television and radio studios in the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park, Sydney.

If the young people love their holiday experience, they can come back for more during term time. Weekly courses run during school term on Sunday mornings for kids and afternoons for teens starting on 19 July. Courses include Filmmaking 101, Video Editing 101 and Screenwriting 101 for teens and Kids Weekend Film Club and Young Animators Club for younger kids.
