The future freelance journalist will probably need a lot more than a spiral bound notebook and a pencil. It’s far more likely they’ll be filming, recording professional broadcast audio of their interviews as they go, possibly taking photos on their digital camera too. They’ll be typing it all up in the field on their laptop so as to upload it on their iPhone to their publisher then add some tweets to their followers too. What they report on will be turned into not just newspaper and magazine articles but possibly online slide shows, an accompanying video, and content for radio or podcasts as well.

The future freelance journalist will probably need a lot more than a spiral bound notebook and a pencil. A voracious 24-hr news cycle needs multi-skilled, multimedia trained, business savvy content producers and lots of them, but they may not want to pay them.
