Sydney Youth Orchestras (SYO)

Online Orchestral Music (1900-Present) Course with SYO

SYO’s Digital Programs are open to all.

Explore the inner workings of 400 years of Orchestral Music with some of Sydney’s most experienced music educators with weekly programs delivered live, online, and accessible from anywhere in the world.

No need to audition.

No need to be an SYO Member.

The Online Orchestral Music (1900-Present) course brings you on a journey through music of the 20th and 21st century, suited to all musicians aged 14-19 (Years 9-12). 

This course focuses on:

  • Rhythmic and melodic dictation

  • Sight-singing

  • Score analysis

  • Works of composers such as Debussy, Messiaen and Schoenberg

  • Composers’ influence on the Western art music aesthetic

A perfect preparation or extension course for those intending to, or who are currently studying International Baccalaureate (IB) Music, HSC Music 2* and/or Music Extension.

 *Music (1900-Present) focuses on essential general knowledge for the HSC Music 2 course.

The Orchestral Music (1900-Present) course runs weekly on Saturdays from 10:00-11:00am.
Classes take place online via SYOnline during NSW School Term periods.
There are six sessions per school term.

Late enrolments will be considered.




Open to all musicians aged 14-19 (Years 9-12), particularly suited to those studying elective music.


Students should be very confident in reading and understanding musical notation to get the most out of this course.
