Call out for Teaching Artists

Incinerator Gallery provides a diverse exhibition schedule and community engagement program, many with a special focus on social justice issues. Our programs are designed for all life stages from babies through to senior adults. 

Studio Workshops encourage local community members (adults) to participate in art making activities that enhance their community connection and wellbeing. Classes are taught to small groups of 8 to 15 students.  

We are seeking Teaching Artists in the areas of:

  • Watercolour painting,
  • Acrylic painting (realist or observational)
  • Printmaking
  • Jewellery making

We are currently seeking to fill the following timeslots:

  • afternoons from 12.30 to 2.30pm, Wednesday
  • evenings from 6.30 to 8.30pm, Tuesday
  • evenings from 6.30 to 8.30pm, Wednesday

Teaching Artists:

  • Research, prepare, and deliver a sequence of lessons to build students skills from beginner to more advanced levels.
  • Setup and pack down of workshop areas to maintain the presentation of Incinerator Gallery and Council facilities.
  • Provide excellent customer service to ensure a positive participant experience.

In order to perform their role successfully Teaching Artists must:

  • Attend a site induction prior to their first class
  • Comply with OH&S policies, Council policies and procedures
  • Comply with current legislation to ensure a Child Safe environment
  • Provide an 8-week lesson plan, photos of anticipated completed artworks and a 75-word description of the overall workshop to attract participants.

Essential skills and knowledge required:

  • Proven ability with chosen medium
  • The capacity to design creative lessons and utilise engaging teaching techniques that build student confidence
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Familiarity with the maintenance, safety and use of equipment in an art studio
  • Ability to work autonomously and without direct supervision
  • Public Liability Insurance with minimum cover of $20 million
  • ABN registration

Preferred skills and knowledge required:

  • Experience teaching adult artmaking workshops
  • Capacity to monitor and manage workshop participant behaviour

Other relevant information:

  • Payment on invoice is $165 per 2 hour workshop (8-week term total $1,320 excluding GST).
  • Teaching Artists are engaged as Contractors (by Agreement)

  • Applicants must briefly respond to role requirements (Essential skills and knowledge), provide their CV and 2 referees.  
  • Applicants must be ready to commence teaching by the week starting 20 April.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview.
