Sydney will spark up again with the announcement of the Vivid 2021 program. Now in its 12th year, this year’s program includes more than 200 events including the popular Vivid Live music program and Light program that sees dazzling projections on some of the city’s best known icons.
Included in the Vivid LIVE program is the Lighting of the Sails, which sees artwork projected onto the Sydney Opera House, ranging from international collaborations to works from First Nations artists. This year’s Lighting of the Sails will be Yarrkalpa – Hunting Ground, 2021 by the Martu Artists and Sydney animation artists Curiious with music from Electric Fields and Martu Artists. Depicting the Parnngurr community and its surrounding landscape, the artwork is inspired by the Martu Artists collective painting Yarrkalpa – Hunting Ground, Parnngurr Area 2013 and part of the award-winning Yarrkalpa – Always Walking Country (2014) artwork by Martu/Wallworth/Anohni. The focus on First Nations work is at odds with recent accusations of systemic racism at Sydney Opera House.
