Landmark queer exhibition coming to NGV

A new exhibition coming to the NGV in December 2021 is set to illuminate the ways in which queer lives and stories have been expressed in art through history.

When Australian photographer Ponch Hawkes took a photo depicting the embrace of two lesbian feminists in the 70s, she captured an iconic and significant moment during Melbourne’s liberation movement.

This moment, and many others like it, will form part of the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) forthcoming Queer exhibition, which aims to interpret queer stories and concepts. Opening in December 2021, Queer will span five gallery spaces and feature more then 300 artworks across historical eras and cultures, and will reflect the multifaceted meaning and usage of the word ‘queer’.
