Mothers pressured to hide their kids

As a culture that worships individual creativity and sniffs at 'family values', the arts can be startlingly cruel to a mother returning to work.

It was not a conversation you’d want to overhear when contemplating motherhood as an artist. Theatre director, Sarah Giles, recalls listening to a senior colleague talk about a fellow director and new mum. 

“She’s an incredible director,’ he said. ‘You wouldn’t even know she’s had a baby. She never talks about the baby—she’s so professional.’
