Paniyiri Greek Festival - It’s On! Brisbane Goes Greek

Plates will smash, honey puffs will be devoured and the bouzouki will be plucked as Brisbane celebrates all things Greek this weekend at the Paniyiri Greek Festival.  This year the festival will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Hellenic Dancers, and pay tribute to the colour, culture and characters that make up the city’s Greek community.  With the Paniyiri Greek Festival THIS WEEKEND, the city is going Greek…. 

WEDNESDAY/TOMORROW - Alex Kondos Memorial Lecture

‘Ancient Crete – Inspiration for Poets and Musicians’ presented by Emeritus Professor Robert (Bob) Milns, School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, University of Queensland.

An illustrated lecture showing the rich and fascinating mythology arising from and connected with ancient Crete, how the stories have been treated, not only by ancient Greek poets, but by poets from other cultures, and will show by examples how western music has made use of this mythology.

Date: Wednesday 17 May at 7:30pm at the The Greek Club – 29 Edmondstone Street, South Brisbane FREE admission 

THURSDAY - Cuppa for a Cause – Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

Hosted by the Greek Orthodox Community of St George Ladies Auxiliary, guests will be treated to a Greek sweet themed morning tea, along with a performance from members of the Hellenic Dancers, to raise funds for the Cancer Council with emcee Jillian Whiting, from Channel 7’s The Great Day out.

Date: Thursday 18 May from 10am to 12noon at the The Greek Club – 29 Edmondstone Street, South Brisbane - Cost$20 per person. To book, phone Desley Lagos on 0418 989 917.

Discover more about West End’s Greek history, marvel at the beautiful and ornate Greek Orthodox Church of St George, hear stories about the Greek community and ‘Milk Bars’, and see Greek architecture as you enjoy a leisurely stroll around West End with the Brisbane Greeters.
