Opening Thursday the 31st May 6pm
Sex, lies and candy, is an exhibition of works by Stephanie Mermigas and Steven Lees.
Stephanie sees creatures in most objects. This is reflected in her paintings, where she brings characters to life through created narratives. She invites viewers into her world to experience these scenarios of everyday objects. Stephanie explores a form of escapism, where she becomes the author of imaginative scenarios that lead ordinary objects to extraordinary situations. It is this view of the world that saw the Candy series emerge. These hyper realistic, larger than life oil paintings focus on key visual elements, including light, shape and colour. These elements are employed to create an overbearing sense of joy.
Stephanie completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in painting at Rmit in 2010. She is currently undertaking the Master of Teaching, Visual Arts at Melbourne University.
The Sex & Lies series sees Steve explore the themes of truth, lies and identity. Through expressive portraiture, these works aim to engage the viewer in a way that feels inherently personal through the raw and explicit depiction of human emotion.
Steve completed his Bachelor of Design (hons) in 2010. He now works as an artist in the studios at House of Bricks Gallery in Collingwood.
