For Kate Cherry, Black Swan State Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, sharing stories and seeking to understand the stories of others is integral in today’s rapidly changing global environment.
In 2015, Cherry has brought together a diverse program of stories – comedy, drama and musical – to engage Perth audiences. In addition, Black Swan’s festive season bonus gives subscribers the chance to win a trip for two to Paris.
There are three comedies on offer: Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit, (pictured above) a frivolous look at ‘astral bigamy’ or what happens when one’s first wife returns from the grave; the aptly titled Dinner about a dinner party from hell and Venus in Fur, a fast-paced tale veering between laughter, sex and fantasy.
Dramas include David Mamet’s Pulitzer prize-winning story Glengarry Glen Ross. Set in Chicago, the play follows four real estate agents as they struggle to close deals on undesirable properties.
Extinction, the world premiere of Australian playwright Hannie Rayson, brings environmental awareness and conservation issues to the fore. Taking the death of an endangered tiger quoll as the backdrop, Extinction asks ‘How do we choose what’s worth saving?’
For music enthusiasts, the rock musical Next to Normal comes to Perth from Broadway, where it won two Tony awards. There is also The Red Balloon for children and families.
