Sworn into power in March, the WA Premier Mark McGowan and his Treasurer Ben Wyatt handed down their first state budget last Thursday.

The tough budget includes a new payroll tax targeting firms with payrolls of $1.5 billion or more, and additional cuts to the public service, with 3000 positions to be axed this year. Given current debt levels, WA will remain in deficit until 2020-21, at which a point a surplus is expected to be recorded.
