Iron Man 3 to be filmed in China
Marvel recently announced that Iron Man 3 will be co-produced by Chinese company DMG Entertainment, meaning that Iron Man will be taking a trip to the far east for his next great adventure. According to Business Week, DMG Entertainment will invest 1bn yuan (approximately $150 million AU) into the project, and will also help in domestic distribution of the film. Head of DMG Entertainment, Dan Mintz, has described the collaboration between DMG and Marvel as a global entertainment “milestone.” "This signifies the first multibillion-dollar franchise to be produced between Hollywood and China," he said. Marvel’s general manager of operations and finance, Rob Steffens, was also very optimistic about the newly forged partnership. "Adding a local flavour, and working with our new local partner, will enhance the appeal and relevance of our characters in China's fast-growing film marketplace," he said. In fact, this partnership is merely the latest in a growing string of collaborations between the U.S. and China. China, who is notoriously known for limiting the number of foreign films that screen in the country, will make exceptions for a film that is co-produced with a Chinese company. Allowing China to co-produce its blockbusters gives the U.S. the advantage of a large Chinese audience, whose ticket sales rose 35 per cent last year, making it the largest market after the U.S. and Japan. Iron Man 3 will see the return of Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, the billionaire who gets his powers from a suit of armour that he built himself. Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle are also expected to return for the third instalment which will begin filming in May of this year. According to Disney’s General Manager for Greater China, Stanley Cheung, China will play a bigger part in the film beyond serving as its filming location. "We know Chinese audiences love Iron Man. So we are going to add Chinese elements and a Chinese story into Iron Man 3," he said. For those who just can’t wait to see Robert Downey Jr reprising his role as the formidable Iron Man, the character will be making another appearance before the release of Iron Man 3. The Avengers, a superhero film which combines the powers of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and the Incredible Hulk will be released next Wednesday on April 25th in Australia.
