2 Danks Street hosts 'Art Super Saturday'
To celebrate ‘Art Month’, Sydney’s Contemporary Art Festival, the creative arts complex of 2 Danks Street will be hosting ‘Art Super Saturday’ on 17th March from 11am until 7pm. ‘Art Super Saturday’ will feature seven hours of free lectures from both local and international artists with expert advice and the preview of exhibitions from each of the nine galleries at the arts complex. “We are at the centre of an extraordinary explosion in urban living,” said Leo Christie, co-owner and founder of 2 Danks Street. The location boasts both Australian and international contemporary art and was opened over a decade ago, in 2001. Christie went on to comment on the opportunity ‘Super Saturday’ will present for the combination of local and creative community: “From Redfern to Green Square, new residents are exploring the arts, design and fine food. This is a real opportunity to meet the people behind the galleries, ask questions and simply enjoy the fine work on offer.” All of the galleries of 2 Danks Street will be open with artists, curators, collectors and experts available throughout the day to answer any questions and offer advice. From the Annette Larkin Fine Art gallery there will be a talk by Larkin titled ‘Collecting Art: Where do I Start?’ accommodating those aspiring collectors. The Syndicate Gallery will preview Jason Simms’ ‘Nowhere Installation’ with the artist in attendance for opening drinks from 4-6pm, and The Dominik Mersch Gallery will host a talk titled ‘The Tyranny of Distance? Collecting Internationally in Australia’ featuring art from Europe’s German-speaking culture. Throughout the day, Art Studio 20/17 will be presenting Aboriginal and Pacific art from the Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land with exhibitions from Wati Mankurpa’s ‘Three Men’ and Melissa Cameron’s jewellery collection, ‘In Geometry I Trust' To celebrate and provide for the day, the Danks St Depot, the complex’s dining hotspot of chef Jared Ingersoll, will offer a specially designed menu for ‘Art Super Saturday.’ With many more scheduled talks and exhibitions available, the full timetabled program for ‘Art Super Saturday’ is available from Sydney’s Contemporary Art Festival, of which ‘Art Super Saturday’ is a part of, runs throughout March celebrating the “vibrancy and visual art” of the city. This is the third annual festival and Eliza Muldoon, the festival’s Artistic Director, has said “we want people to get excited about contemporary art and to make them feel both welcomed and involved.”
