About Us

Duldig Studio, in East Malvern, Victoria, is the former home and studio of internationally recognised sculptor Karl Duldig (1902 to 1986) and his wife, artist and inventor Slawa Duldig (née Horowitz) (1902 to 1975). Opened in 1996 as a house museum, in 2002 it transitioned into a public house museum and art gallery.

In the artists’ charming former home, garden and studio, the sculptures, drawings, paintings and decorative arts tell the story of their creative lives in Vienna, Singapore and Melbourne. The museum offers the opportunity to explore and enjoy fine art in an authentic domestic setting – an inspiring and rare privilege.

A gallery space was added to the original house so that changing exhibitions could be mounted. Within the house, a number of rooms are maintained as they were during the family’s residence. Karl’s original studio, with kiln, tools and work across all periods has been kept as it was left by the artist, and in the adjoining garden the bronze and terracotta sculptures also remain in situ. There are also fantastic documents and three original prototypes of the improved foldable umbrella for which Slawa was granted a patent in 1929 and  was exhibited at the 1931 Vienna Spring Fair.

The museum houses an extensive collection of art, decorative art and archival material concerning the artists’ life and work and was set up to care for, give public access to and educate about the collection. It also aims to ‘inspire creative journeys’, using the Duldig story of resilience in the face of great personal obstacles and their lifelong creativity to encourage similar creative journeys for others. The experience of visiting the museum and seeing and understanding Karl and Slawa’s stories, and the extraordinary body of work displayed is unique and inspirational, for visitors of all ages.

Opening hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays and second Saturday of each month 1-3pm, with guided tours at 2pm. Entry fee is $20 full fee and $10 for concessions. Group tours are hosted by appointment only.
