The Australian Script Centre , the team behind AustralianPlays.org has been selectively collecting, promoting and distributing contemporary Australian plays since 1979. We are recognised by the Australia Council for the Arts as a key provider of essential infrastructure services to the theatre sector.
The Centre’s work supports playwrights in particular by filling the gap left by the very small number of Australian plays that achieve commercial publication. Our website, AustralianPlays.org, gives playwrights a global distribution and marketing network for their work as well as giving producers everywhere a simple access point for quality, production-ready Australian plays. We also facilitate the production of Australian plays through our photocopying and production licensing services.
As owner and manager of AustralianPlays.org, we work with other theatrical publishers to provide a single entry point to the full range of contemporary Australian playwriting and associated support materials.
The ASC is a non-profit association whose stakeholders represent a diverse community of theatre makers, including playwrights, drama educators, students, theatre companies and producers.
What we do
Our resources are directed into three main areas, namely;
Playscripts are the ASC's lifeblood. We strive to build a catalogue that represents the full spectrum of Australian playwriting in terms of genre, style, cultural diversity, intended audience and subject matter.
Set up and managed by the Australian Script Centre in collaboration with other Australian theatrical publishers, australianplays.org is a one-stop shop for theatre professionals, community groups, researchers, educators, students and others with an interest in Australian performance writing. More
To simplify rights management for playwrights and theatre-makers, the ASC issues licences on application for the copying and, in many cases, also the production of plays in its catalogue. The ASC also enters into licensing agreements with various suppliers for the distribution and sale of Australian theatrical works through australianplays.org. More
We have a range of showcases and collections that provide a strong focus on aspects of Australian playwriting. This includes our commissioned essay series State of Play, the Playbox collection of scripts, Red Door in which our Literary Manager shines a light on selected works in our collections and our relatively new partnership with the Sydney Festival.
