Founded in 1953 to support the Art Gallery of NSW, the Society is a not-for-profit public company and registered charity with our own governing council, staff, budget, annual report and events program. This structure enables the Society to raise funds to assist the Gallery with acquisitions of art, for which there is currently no government funding.
Operating as the membership arm of the Gallery, the organisation provides a range of benefits and activities to enhance members' experience of art and culture. Benefits include a range of discounts, free exhibition viewings, a monthly magazine and more than 400 lectures, workshops and other events each year.
In the course of 60 years the membership body has evolved from an elite social club to a modern, broad-based organisation of people from every walk of life across New South Wales. For members, the Gallery is a home away from home, a place to return to again and again to view the ever-changing displays of art and take up some of the many learning opportunities on offer.
The Gallery values our members, who represent the loyal support of the community we serve.
