About Us

Heide Museum of Modern Art or Heide as it is affectionately known began life in 1935 as the home of John and Sunday Reed and has since evolved into one of Australia’s most important cultural institutions.

Through their championing of contemporary art and culture, and their moral and financial support of artists such as Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, John Perceval and Charles Blackman the Reeds and Heide became central figures in the development of modernism in Melbourne.

The Reeds lived to see their vision fulfilled for Heide to become a public museum when Heide Park & Art Gallery opened in November 1981. They both died shortly afterwards in December 1981, ten days apart. John and Sunday made a significant contribution to Australian culture through their support of creative endeavours in the visual arts, literature, architecture, gardening and food culture. They are remembered as champions of modern art, music and literature and remain two of Australia's most important art benefactors.

Today, Heide Museum of Modern Art offers an inspiring, educational and through-provoking experience of modern and contemporary art, architecture and landscape. Heide is only a 20 minute drive from Melbourne’s CBD and is open all year round, Tuesday-Sunday, from 10am-5pm.
