About Us

Brown's Mart, in the heart of Darwin's central business district, is a versatile venue comprising the heritage indoor theatre, an outdoor courtyard, bar, rehearsal room and the Happy Yess room. Capacity ranges from 60 to 300 depending on inside or outside use and how the seating is deployed.

Brown's Mart sits adjacent to Civic Park, opposite State Square and close to Christ Church Cathedral. This area was originally the commercial centre of Palmerston (as the city was then known). It was built in 1885 and from 1887 to 1910 Victor Voules Brown conducted business from the premises, thus the name 'Brown's Mart.'

The building saw many uses before being converted into a theatre in the early 1970s. It has hosted numerous music and theatrical events and holds a very special place in the hearts of long term Territorians.

Festival goers and a new generation of audiences for the music events and theatre shows now enjoy the Brown's Mart ambiance. The venue attracts a wide variety of performance for all ages. Artists of acclaim who have performed at Brown's Mart include Yothu Yindi, The Black Keys, Michelle Nicolle Quartet, Drum Drum and Dave Graney. In addition this is the home of the 32 - Brown's Mart Producing Hub.
