About Us

Since 2002, Artistic Director Erin Helyard has led Pinchgut to present seventeen rarely performed operatic gems. Other companies do the more familiar operas excellently; we want to help audiences discover something new.

Our artistic and creative teams are driven by excellence, a desire to unearth these rarely performed operas and to present them for our beloved audience. We are proud to acknowledge that we achieve consistently excellent reviews. All our productions have been broadcast by ABC Classic FM and all but one recorded for CD – originally by ABC Classics but recently on our own label Pinchgut LIVE.

Alongside the early music instrumentalists in the Orchestra of the Antipodes, Australian singers are frequently attracted from overseas careers to perform with this unique company. Pinchgut Opera's live recordings of the operas attract worldwide acclaim. Our recent recording of Iphigénie en Tauride was recently named ‘Opera Recording of the Year’ by Voix de Arts.

There is a huge treasure trove of marvelous works that Australian audiences have not seen. Cavalli, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Rameau, Grétry, Salieri and Charpentier are almost unheard of, as opera composers, in this country. Pinchgut mines this treasure trove to deliver the best of these as our productions.

Our list of productions is as follows; Handel’s Semele followed by Purcell’s The Fairy Queen (2003), Monteverdi’s Orfeo (2004), Rameau’s Dardanus (2005), Mozart’s Idomeneo (2006), Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans (2007), Charpentier’s David et Jonathas (2008), Cavalli’s Ormindo (2009), Haydn’s L’anima del filosofo (2010), Vivaldi’s Griselda (2011), Rameau’s Castor & Pollux (2012), Cavalli’s Giasone (2013), Salieri’s The Chimney Sweep (July 2014), Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride (Dec 2014), Vivaldi’s Bajazet (Jul 2015), Grétry’sL’Amant jaloux (Dec 2015), Haydn's Armida (Jun 2016) and Handel's Theodora (Dec 2016).

We continue to be extremely grateful to our audience who buy tickets and continue to take a chance on us to experience these unknown works and to our donors and supporters.
