Lighting the dark spots of creative careers

Even after almost 500 productions, Broadway awards and an international reputation, the working life of a lighting designer remains precarious.

Welcome to the world of the precariat. Lighting designers, like most theatre practitioners in this country, work on a freelance basis. There is very little job security in any area of professional theatre apart from administration and general arts management. Good steady jobs might be available in client services or marketing or media but if you want to be a theatre ‘maker,’ be prepared for long periods of unemployment.

Theatre performance depends on a large base of unemployed or under-employed talent for its survival. If you want to know who provides the highest proportion of arts subsidy in this country, then I can tell you that it comes from the personal income sacrifice of arts makers.

Nigel Levings is one of Australia’s leading theatre lighting designers. He has lit over 490 original productions including 174 operas and 28 musicals. His awards include Helpmann  and Green Room Awards, the Los Angeles Ovation  Award and the Canadian Dora Mava Moore Award. On  Broadway he has won two Outer Circle Critics Awards,  a Drama Desk and a Tony Award. He was awarded  the Centenary Federation Medal by the Australian  Government for his services to opera lighting and, in  2003, was honoured by the SA Great – Arts Award.
