About the Course

The power of storytelling is that it engages attention, invites empathy and increases the likelihood that your ideas will be accepted and adopted. This one day workshop will transform the way you communicate. You will discover the creative techniques that filmmakers use to connect with their audience on an emotional level.


In this hands-on workshop you will learn:

  • where science meets art - how storytelling affects the brain
  • the five key elements of a powerful story that will capture an audience’s attention
  • how a story can make a message stick in a compelling and memorable way
  • how to translate these techniques to deliver your own clear and irresistible call to action


For over 40 years, AFTRS has taught Australia’s creative talent to tell compelling stories that have had the power to move and inspire. Storytelling is now considered an essential skill for anyone who needs to communicate effectively with prospects, customers, leaders or peers. The Applied Storytelling workshop uses practical exercises to ensure you can apply these creative communications skills directly to your workplace.

All of AFTRS business courses build on Storytelling skills and we highly recommend that you consider this workshop as a pre-requisite for Presentation Skills and Writing Video Briefs and Scripts.


This course is suitable for anyone from absolute beginner to master communicator.


It was great to really think about how to present messaging as a story.

This course gave me a new perspective to communicate and pitch my designs to an audience.

Andrew Garrick is a deeply experienced TV and digital content producer. Andrew’s success has been defined by his ability to understand and engage audiences. He has produced major projects for Channels Seven and Ten, ABC, SBS, MTV and BBC Worldwide and as an Executive Producer for content at Ensemble - an agency which prides itself on creating "Opt-In" ideas . He is currently directing multiple shows for the ABC and is in development with Beyond Screen for a feature film. Recently, he helped establish a joint venture between Beyond Productions and Ensemble Australia to create Virtual Reality stories. Andrew has also directed commercials for Volvo, Formula One, Target, Queensland Tourism and many more.

He wrote the digital spin-off of Offspring - The Nurses - a radio play for MMM called The Day Before The Day Before Tomorrow and then after creating and directing the scripted comedy Micro Nation for Network Ten, he's largely continued on the comedy path. Andrew has developed shows with leading independent production companies including Shine, Fremantle Australia, Screentime, and Beyond Production and has a long list of commercial producing and directing credits.
