Featuring conductor Gerard Schwarz and soloist Stephen Kovacevich (piano)
The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) opens its 2012 Season in February with a 70th birthday celebration for world renowned pianist Stephen Kovacevich.
Mr Kovacevich will join QSO with highly acclaimed conductor, Maestro Gerard Schwarz. The Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10. Mr Kovacevich describes the opening of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4 as, “one of the miracles of music”.
On 17 October 2010 Mr Kovacevich celebrated his 70th birthday with a concert at the Wigmore Hall in London, a venue he performed in for the first time over 50 years ago. This year it is Australia’s turn to celebrate Mr Kovacevich’s 70th.
As a pianist Mr Kovacevich’s love of music began at a young age, “I started playing a little upright piano at my grandmother’s house, but really my love of music first began when, at an early age, I heard Mozart’s Symphony No.40 and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger.” Mr Kovacevich said. In his performing career he has won unsurpassed admiration for his playing of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Schubert. In addition to his long and distinguished career as a soloist, Mr Kovacevich has conducted for many years, winning warm praise for his work with orchestras throughout the world.
The QSO is excited to open the 2012 Season with Stephen Kovacevich and Maestro Gerard Schwarz.
The QSO is the largest performing arts company in Queensland and the state’s only professional symphony orchestra.
