College Fall, Perth

As band names go, College Fall has a definite American ring to it. Uni Autumn might be more Australian perhaps. But no matter. The co-ed duo of Glenn Musto and Jodie Lee Bartlett are definitely Aussie, forming in remote WA and now stationed in Melbourne. And in fact, College Fall is the second name the band has had: its 2003 debut The Town We Loved I was released under the moniker, Showbag. Yet Musto and Barlett have thrived despite the mid-career name change, releasing 2007''s concept album Eleven Letters to much success before returning with the hotly tipped The Curse of Us.
Not to harp on the American thing, but there''s a real influence of U.S. indie rock on College Fall. It''s one that cuts across successive generations, from the Replacements to Sebadoh to Death Cab For Cutie. In the end it''s a steady focus on melodies, lyrics, and atmosphere alike, answering resourceful instrumentation with catchy vocalising and songwriting. The 12-song, 44-minute The Curse of Us looks to be another heartfelt outing from Musto and Bartlett, bursting with emotive urgency. At the same time, expect it to be tempered with years of touring experience, songwriting chops, and personal maturity.
