Following on from the critical acclaim and popular success of its massive 2011 Contemporary Music Program, Campbelltown Arts Centre takes enormous pride in launching the 2012 Contemporary Music Program with Daorum: a Weekend of Creative Fire.
Guest Music Curator, Dr Matthew Hindson has once again gathered together artists of national and international significance to perform at Campbelltown Arts Centre. The 2012 launch festivities focus on Daorum, a group that succeeds in fusing two extraordinary musical cultures. Daorum incorporates Korean traditional rhythms and contemporary improvisation creating an exciting high-energy cultural exchange as it draws on selections from the pansori classics as vehicles for improvisation. Campbelltown Arts Centre is privileged to host Bae Il Dong, one of the greatest pansori artists of our time. Bae Il Dong will not only perform as part of Daorum but will also deliver a rare two-hour vocal workshop.
Other members of Daorum include the renowned Kim Dong Won (voice and percussion), Phil Slater (trumpet), Carl Dewhurst (guitar), Matt McMahon (piano) & Daorum founder & leader Simon Barker (drums).
Campbelltown Arts Centre in association with the Korean Cultural Office is delighted to announce that in addition to the Daorum concert there will be a free screening of the award winning feature documentary Intangible Asset Number 82. This profound film directed by Emma Franz follows Simon Barker’s search for an enigmatic Korean shaman. During the film we learn of Bae Il Dong’s extraordinary life story and of Simon Barker’s own rite of passage, as he is inspired and transformed by the journey.
Daorum: A Weekend of Creative Fire will certainly ignite our passions as we embark on our musical adventure for 2012.
“These musicians are redefining what collaborative music-making can be in the twenty-first century. Not only are they superb performers but the music they produce is unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. The closest to music from another planet I can imagine.”
