From January 9th to 31st this year, the National Botanical Gardens in partnership with the Friends of the Gardens hosts one of Canberra region’s most popular outdoor music events, its annual Summer Sounds Concert Series on Eucalypt Lawn every Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Summer Sounds 2010 features five consecutive weekends of local bands and musicians performing in the setting of the some of the finest collection of Australian native plants. The concerts are fundraising events organized by the Friends of the Gardens in order to develop a range of community projects for the organization for that year.
Even in it’s 13th year, Summer Sounds continues to draw hundreds of visitors to its grounds and this year. it presents an eight concert series with a handful of the more well-known Canberra blues and roots, jazz, and swing bands such as Annie And the Armadillos, As Famous As The Moon, Karismakatz, Queen Juanita and Dr Stovepipe; as well as a couple of free taster class for all age groups, so don’t forget to bring a picnic and a rug to sit on and your outdoor dancing shoes!
Surrounded by only things of happiness and beauty, it’s a wonderful way to spend a mid-summer’s night in Canberra as its beautiful surroundings does make it (undisputedly) the ideal setting for picnic gatherings with family, friends and even lovers. So just sit back and relax with a cool glass of something sparkly and some yummy cheese, enjoy the ambiance and let your mind drift (if only for 90 minutes).
Since this year all concerts will be held on the Eucalypt Lawn (which is roughly a ten minute walk uphill), make sure that whatever you bring with you – it has wheels on it and of course, get there early!
