SMPAA awards in Adelaide

The winners of Australia’s most lucrative performing arts prize, the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards (SMPAA) 2009, will be announced at a ceremony at Tandanya National Aboriginal Culture Institute in Adelaide on Friday (5 March).
The awards, which are presented for the preceding year, acknowledge the achievements of the country’s finest performing artists and producers in the fields of drama, dance, opera, music and theatre.
A winner will be announced in three different categories: Individual Award ($ 40,000), Group Award ($70,000) and Facilitator’s prize ($15,000).
Created in 1984 to celebrate the late Sidney Myer’s love of performing arts, the award is a major event on the Australian arts calendar counting legends such as Geoffrey Rush, Paul Grabowsky, Archie Roach and Neil Armfield among previous winners.
The award ceremony is expected to attract the who’s who of the performing arts scene with more than 150 guests including Lindy Hume, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney Festival, Genevieve Lacey, Artistic Director Four Winds Festival and Carillo Gantner, Chairman Sidney Myer Fund.
