MEDIA RELEASE COURTESY OF: LINDEN POSTCARD SHOW 2010
The 19th annual Linden Postcard Show opens on 6 February 2010 with nearly 2,000 small contemporary art works by 753 artists from all over Australia - many from out of the way places but all are for sale.
The small format means the majority of the works are reasonably priced. You might find a great work by an established artist such as Jenny Watson, whose work can be found in the National Gallery of Victoria or there is always the chance that you will discover the next Patricia Piccinini, a member of the large Postcard Show alumni. The Postcard Show is the biggest open entry award exhibition in Australia.
Every entry is exhibited, revealing an enormous diversity of art forms and, as always, some new talent. This year’s judging will be
particularly difficult but Linden’s 2010 judges: Megan Backhouse, Arts journalist, The Age; Alex Baker, Senior Curator Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Victoria; and Jane Scott, Director Tarra Warra Museum of Art are up to the challenge.
Opening celebrations are from 11am - 5pm on Saturday 6 February with bar and live music by The Ukeladies. The 2010 Postcard Show awards will be announced at 1.30pm. Everyone is welcome! The Postcard Show continues until Saturday 27 March.
Each artist is vying for a share in this year’s massive $13,000 prize pool.
The prizes are:
Bendigo Bank Award $5,000
Palais Theatre Management Artist Support Award $2,000
St Kilda Art Supplies Award of $1,000 worth of art materials
Bendigo Bank People’s Choice Award $1,000
Bendigo Bank People’s Voters Award $1,000
Member for Albert Park Award $500
In addition to the above, 6 works are to be selected to be reproduced as Linden postcards with each artist receiving $250. The collection of winning postcards now numbers 126.
Exhibition dates: 6 February – 27 March
Venue: Linden Centre for Contemporary Art, 26 Ackland Street
