Art schools in Australia are in the hot seat. The University of Western Sydney is cutting back its art programs, while the National Art School continues to generate debate over its proposed merger with the College of Fine Art. Both scenarios have forced a wave of discussion about what our art schools should consist of, and for whom. Those at the heart of the issue will assemble this weekend for more debate.
What Are Art Schools For? is an exhibition exploring the relationship between artists and institutions. On show at the Cross Art Projects in Kings Cross, Sydney, the exhibit concludes this Saturday 14 October.
That afternoon, from 4 to 5pm, artists participating in the exhibition and teachers and students affected by the UWS and NAS crises will gather for a public conversation on Australian art schools and their current challenges.
The conversation will focus on the common experience of art schools facing cuts and downgrading. Organisers say they aim to make a small contribution to the ongoing debate about the value and position of art in our society by considering the problems from the perspective of teaching art. The hopes are the conversation might be able to cover ground not easily covered by the more abstract mission statements of major organisations.
Participants include artists: Justin Trendall, Andrew Hurle, Christopher Dean, Maria Cruz, Sue Pedley and Save UWS Art School. Everyone is invited to attend to share their views on art and education and the current state of the affairs of art institutions in Sydney.
