Six independent local artists will “now call the ‘Judy’ home” as part of the Judith Wright Centre FRESH GROUND artist-in-residence initiative, Director Ruth Hodgman announced today.

“We are thrilled to welcome our latest artists-in-residence, who will undertake their creative developments at the Judith Wright Centre during the second half of this year,” Ms Hodgman said.

“This time around we were particularly impressed by the diversity of intriguing ideas, and we’ve handpicked a selection that deserve the time and space to be explored.

“FRESH GROUND is all about empowering local artists, exploring new arts territory and harnessing the creativity of our city; we can’t wait to see what this next crop of artists comes up with.”

Each successful artist will receive up to $15 000 worth of cash, space, expertise, equipment to develop, create and rehearse their projects.

Commencing in July, successful applicants and projects from the second round of funding include:

Sofia Woods: Eye to Eye
A live art physical performance project

Yitzhak Yedid: Composing Residency
Mr Yedid is a Jerusalem-born composer/pianist of third stream music with eight internationally released albums through a German record company.

Dawn Albinger: No Door On Her Mouth
A contemporary solo performance invoking choking diva, handless maidens and flightless women to deconstruct the Western myth of romantic love.

Andrea Jenkins: The RoCk
The story of Azaria Chamberlain is explored through physical theatre

Claire Marshall: Mod
A fushion of contemporary dance with Mod and Northern Soul music, exploring and expanding movement vocabulary.

Donna Cameron: Oh Sister
Writer, performer and director will work on the script that explores notions of revenge and feline bullying.

FRESH GROUND was launched by the Judith Wright Centre and Arts Queensland in late 2009.

Applications for the next round of funding will be open from late August. Applications forms can be downloaded from the Judith Wright Centre website, here.
