The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is offering a range of Workshops and Master Classes at this year’s festival. Hosted throughout Ballarat, the workshops include those presented by BIFB’11 and others by independent presenters. Here is a selection of the official events.
Featured photographer from the first Daylesford Foto Biennale in 2005, Anthony Browell will be discussing his life in photography at the event, ‘Paths in Portraiture, and back to Pinholes.’ From his beginnings as a freelance photographer in London during the early 60s, to his 35 years of editorial, illustrative, and exhibited work in Sydney, Browell has recently rediscovered his enthusiasm for pinhole photography. He will be concentrating on snapping incredible portraiture and using pinhole cameras.
There are a lot of photographers out there. So how does a working photographer make sure they’re commissioned for jobs and get work? According to photography teacher and expert Sally Brownbull, the key is having an impressive portfolio. Her workshop, ‘Building a Better Portfolio’ provides photographers with tips and hints on how to best present work and how to edit photos professionally. She will also be taking time to look at participants’ portfolios and will guide them through what is and isn’t working, while also suggesting improvements in the layout and content.
One of the most anticipated Master Classes of BIFB’11 would have to be Sarah Saudek’s ‘Photographing the Nude.’ The right-hand of the famed ‘enfant terrible’ of Czech photography, Jan Saudek, Sarah has become a gifted and renowned photographer in her own right.
If you’re more interested in buildings than nudes, John Gollings is presenting Architectural Photography Master Class. As one of Australia’s finest and most respected architectural photographers, Gollings will guide the class through practical demonstrations photographing the built environment. The creative director of NOW and WHEN Australian Urbanism, Gollings is the perfect tutor for this favoured photographic subject.
A photographer with years experience out of the concrete jungle and into the wild is Sarah Louise Jackson. As part of the BIFB’11 Core Program, Jackson will present Creatures, a collection of her wildlife photography. To learn how to capture similar shots, she’ll be staging a ‘Photographing Wildlife Master Class.’
