Katy Abbott is a contemporary classical composer in Melbourne. She writes orchestral, choral, chamber & film music.
Abbott says of her music: 'In my music, I am trying to capture the little things that make us human or happen to us because we are human. I seek to unpack the human side of life humour, foibles, quirky things we do and say, beauty, grief and friendship'.
Her latest album is Sunburnt Aftertones: the chamber music of Katy Abbott, a CD featuring a fine selection of chamber pieces spanning the last decade.
Highlights include a funky new solo bassoon work (MultiSonics, 2010) and a heartbreaking journey across the sea (No Ordinary Traveller, 2006). The album also includes beautiful sound-images of both Australia (Sunburnt Aftertones, 2001) and far away lands (Egyptian Wish, 2001 and The Empty Quarter, 2008).
Music critic and author, Rosalind Appleby describes this CD as 'poetic, assertive music that is jubilantly of its time'.
